Figment is dedicated entirely to reading and writing. Users can explore a library of creative writing pieces submitted by known and up and coming writers. The user can also store their own work on Figment. The web based platform ensures that the user can access their work from any device with an internet connection. Figment also includes a social networking element that allows users to connect with others to discuss writing topics, share their work and receive feedback from the community. Users can also join or make groups. Ebooks are listed along with a button that shows the user where they can purchase the title. Additional features include an area designated to writing contests. Figment was founded by Dana Goodyear and Jacob Lewis. Both founders have a history with the popular publication the New Yorker. Figment was designed to provide writers and readers with a place to discover new talent and share their thoughts about writing. The website currently supports an active user community through its forum along with the contributions of many writers in its library.

Many of the visual elements appear hand drawn, including the website buttons and borders. This really helps Figment stand out as a site for just about everyone, even new writers and readers who are not terribly well read. The result is a very unintimidating environment that nurtures literacy and practice.

A new user can join the Figment community by clicking the red “Sign Up” button found near the top, center of the homepage. A second button is available along the left hand side. Both take the user to the registration form, which requires a name, email address and password. The user must also supply their date of birth and gender. A small box at the bottom of the form must be manually selected to confirm that the user is at least 13 years old and agrees to the website’s terms of service. Two links above the form invite users to register with a Facebook or Twitter account.

Figment welcomes all readers and writers for free. There are no subscription fees or other charges required for creating an account and using the site. Users will have to pay if they decide to purchase reading material however this is paid to the retailer and not the website. Users can also access a mobile version of the site. There are no limitations on reading, writing and forum posting.

Figment.com is an excellent website for new writers. A seasoned writer or reader can find a new audience and unique pieces to explore, however the site seems geared more towards a younger crowd. There is plenty for teens and adults to do on Figment. The forum encourages user interaction and gives individuals a place to receive unbiased feedback. Users can also browse for books and find out where they can buy them through the Figment library.
